Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) for Tourism: What Destination Marketers Need to Know

AI travel answers are often concise. A traveler may receive a short list before visiting a destination website, so the first audit question is whether the destination appears and is described accurately under recorded test conditions.
AEO is one label for work that improves the usefulness and accessibility of official content while measuring whether a destination appears in sampled AI answers. It does not create a guaranteed placement mechanism or replace SEO.
The name sounds technical. The work is not. It is mostly about answering real questions in public, keeping your facts consistent, and checking what the machines actually say about you.
What AEO means for a destination
Search results and generated answers are different surfaces. A sampled answer may name several places and show citations or links. The practical job is to make official information accurate, crawlable, useful to travelers, and easy to verify, not to assume which source caused the answer.
Across repeated Drifter samples, destinations can appear differently by prompt, provider, locale, and time. Those observations identify questions and source gaps to investigate; they do not prove that one page caused an inclusion or omission.
For a DMO, this adds an answer-level observation layer before or alongside site visits. When visible citations favor third-party sources, record that pattern and compare the cited claims with current official information.
How AEO differs from the SEO you already do
SEO covers crawlability, indexability, relevance, links, useful content, and search performance. AEO and GEO are practitioner labels for making that work useful on generated-answer surfaces. Generated answers vary, so success should be reported as repeated presence, framing, accuracy, and visible citation patterns, not a fixed rank. Clear structure and structured data remain normal search hygiene when they match visible content; neither guarantees citation or recommendation.
What to do first
1. Start from questions, not keywords. List the discovery questions travelers ask before they name a place: occasions, seasons, audiences, trip shapes. Every one of those questions is a surface your content can support.
2. Group related questions around a real traveler job. Strengthen the best existing page when it can answer that job; create a new page only when the intent is distinct and the official site has no adequate resource. Use direct answers, practical details, and reader-serving FAQs where they add value.
3. Keep important facts consistent across the official site, listings, and partner pages. Record discrepancies as data-quality issues. Do not claim that consistency by itself changes an AI answer.
4. Protect technical eligibility and clarity. Use accurate titles, internal links, crawlable text, sitemaps, and structured data that matches the visible page. Google says no special AI file or schema is required for its generative Search features.
5. Establish a repeatable baseline. Run the same versioned questions under recorded conditions, preserve answers and visible citations, and compare later samples after changes are live. Treat movement as descriptive unless the design supports causality.
How to know if it is working
Answer Share is the mention rate across a fixed set of blind questions under recorded conditions. Our public Drifter methodology explains the measure, and our 8-step AI visibility audit for DMOs covers a manual first pass.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. Google treats optimization for its generative Search features as part of SEO. Other AI products have their own access and answer surfaces, so teams should add repeated answer measurement without abandoning core search work.
Is this the same as GEO or LLM optimization?
These terms overlap but are not settled standards. Use them as capture language. The durable work is normal search hygiene plus repeated measurement of presence, framing, accuracy, and visible sources.
How fast does AEO show results?
There is no reliable universal timeline. Crawling, indexing, provider refreshes, prompt conditions, and source changes vary. Recheck under comparable conditions and do not interpret one changed answer as proof that a specific edit worked.
Where should a small DMO team start?
Pick five high-value blind questions, record current answers and visible sources, and identify one evidence-backed action. Small teams should favor a narrow repeatable panel over a large, irregular audit.
